Old brands, new media

Large, monolithic, old and dusty companies get a lot of flak for being stuck in the past and unwilling to adapt to (or better yet, lead) changes in marketing brought about by the rise of social networks and mobile devices. There’s this increasing divide between how youngsters get their media and the traditional way of doing business. Companies who don’t understand the social web end up clinging to their shrinking core customer base as upstarts bite their ankles raw.

Incremental inspiration

My job as a programmer is to solve problems: customers need something that doesn’t exist yet and I have to solve problems in order to make that ‘something’ into, well, something. My success as a developer is largely dependent on how good of a problem solver I am. I have a large array of disparate tools, a goal, and the resources to build. The work, then, must be to combine all of those in an innovative fashion to produce a result that is cost effective and functional.

Giving = Receiving?

Our category for blog posts this month covers Giving and Receiving. When brainstorming for topics on either side, I volunteered to write about how Giving and Receiving is really the same thing; two sides of the same coin. But are they?

I open with these three quotes from people who are much wiser on this subject than I am to set the stage. When one thinks of the Christmastime holiday, no matter the religion (or none at all) one is a believer of, thoughts turn toward receiving and giving.

Learning more about Triple Bottom Line

I have to admit that before this series of blog posts, I hadn’t heard of the phrase “Triple Bottom Line”, or TPL/3BL. For a long time, though, I’ve felt that the monetary cost that one pays when purchasing items or services does not fully reflect the accurate environmental cost. Instead it only focuses on the exploitation of the difference between paying as little as possible when obtaining items and charging as much as possible when selling them.

Questions to ask when you commission a website

Building a website isn’t like buying socks: You can’t just go to the ‘website store’ and pick one up on your way home from the getting groceries. But, it doesn’t have to be confusing or difficult, either. All it takes is some preparation. Start by asking yourself these three types of questions:

  1. What do I need and want?
  2. How soon do I need it?
  3. How much am I willing to invest?
