We all know that in the world of design and marketing things are changing, and at warp speed. Print is on a steep decline and web and mobile apps are becoming the norm. (Right now some of you might be correcting that to “is the norm”.) Everybody is expected to blog, post and some of us, Tweet – a whole new set of verbs they did not teach me in college!
On the one shoulder I have Locutus (Captain Picard’s Borg Alter-Ego) whispering, “Resistance is futile”, and on the other is Billy Crystal reminding me, “Change is such hard work”. Unfortunately (fortunately?!), both speak the truth.
I’ve heard that one of the main reasons employees are resistant to change is they’re really not sure how exactly the change will affect their position and their responsibilities within the company. MMG isn’t just a job to me. It is such a big part of my life that to be honest, the thought of it changing scares me. But logically I also know that change happens, whether we want it to or not, and that it’s not only good for me personally and professionally, but for my coworkers and MMG as a whole. Of course, it’s also a huge help to know that we’ve all got each other’s backs.
I have been taking some baby steps. I can now text up a storm on my first ever cell phone (almost three weeks old), I paired the car and the phone’s Bluetooth (no help needed thank you!), I have a Flickr site (that I faithfully upload to... every few months) and I am now the experienced (ha!) author of six whole blogs!
No doubt about it, change can be scary and is hard work, but it’s also exciting and I look forward to seeing what the years to come have in store.
